PRIMAVERA explores the resurgence of fascism in Europe through photography. The Alps, a symbol of Nazi propaganda and a region of resistance for the Italian Partisan movement, provide the setting for this visual investigation. In the autumn of 1944, the Ossola Valley in Piedmont became the site of intense battles between resistance groups and German SS and Wehrmacht forces, culminating in the execution of 42 resistance fighters in Fondotoce. However, in September 1944, the valley experienced a brief liberation, giving rise to a partisan republic that lasted for 40 days.
The photographic project PRIMAVERA combines atmospheric images of the alpine landscape and architecture of the Ossola Valley with intimate portraits of young adults, the same age as their ancestors, who joined the armed resistance against fascism almost 80 years ago. By pairing places from the past with individuals from the present, the work creates a space for reflection on the growing right-wing populist movements in Europe today.
