PRIMAVERA, 2024 — UPCOMING
Ongoing photographic collaboration with
PRIMAVERA explores the resurgence of fascism in Germany and Italy through photography. The setting for this visual examination is the northern Italian Alps, which served both as a projection space for Nazi ideology and a stronghold of the Italian partisan resistance movement. In particular, the Ossola Valley in Piedmont was the site of numerous battles in the autumn of 1944 between Resistenza groups and German SS and Wehrmacht units. These culminated in the execution of 42 resistance fighters in Fondotoce. However, in September 1944, the valley was temporarily liberated, leading to the establishment of a partisan republic that lasted for 40 days.
PRIMAVERA combines atmospheric images of Alpine landscapes and the architecture of the Ossola Valley with intimate portraits of young people and eyewitnesses who participate in ongoing trips to Resistenza memorial sites. Historical imagery is also integrated into the work. This visual exploration of Italy’s anti-fascist resistance provides a framework for reflecting on the rise of right-wing populist movements in contemporary Germany and Italy.
